Glossary

  1. AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location): A technology system that tracks the real-time location of vehicles and assets using GPS and sensor integrations.
  2. Unit: Any trackable object in the system such as a vehicle, equipment, individual, or asset.
  3. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity): A unique identifier assigned to each GPS tracking device.
  4. SIM Number / SIM Serial: Identification details for the SIM card used in a GPS tracking device to enable connectivity.
  5. Device Protocol: A decoder or communication method used by AVL Pro to interpret incoming signals from tracking devices.
  6. Sensor: A device that collects environmental or motion-related data (e.g., temperature, humidity, motion, fuel).
  7. Command: A remote instruction sent from the platform to a device to perform an action (e.g., block engine, start AC).
  8. Monitoring List: A real-time dashboard showing units' locations, movement status, parameters, and tracking information.
  9. Motion State: Describes whether a unit is moving or stationary and whether the engine is on or off.
  10. CAN.Bus (Controller Area Network Bus): A robust vehicle bus standard that allows microcontrollers and devices within a vehicle to communicate with each other without a host computer. In AVL Pro, it's used to automatically retrieve accurate data such as odometer readings, engine hours, fuel levels, and more from the vehicle’s internal systems.
  11. Geofence: A virtual boundary on the map that triggers alerts or actions when a unit enters or exits.
  12. Marker: A custom-defined point on the map used for referencing or triggering events.
  13. Quick Track: A feature that instantly generates a visual track of a unit’s movements over a specified time.
  14. Track Player: A tool to simulate unit movement over time on the map.
  15. Odometer: Measures total kilometers traveled by a unit—can be set manually or retrieved via CAN.Bus.
  16. Engine Hours: Total operational time of a unit’s engine, manually input or fetched from CAN.Bus.
  17. Unit Shared Group: A feature that grants external or internal users limited or inherited access to specific groups of units.
  18. Unit Group: A collection of units organized under a single category for easier monitoring, reporting, and access management.
  19. Multi-Unit Follow (MUF): A view mode allowing the user to monitor selected units on multiple dedicated map screens in real time.
  20. Cluster / Uncluster: Map tools that group nearby units or geofences together for simplified visualization.
  21. Layers Control: Map function to show/hide units, markers, geofences, and other map data elements.
  22. Notifications: Alerts triggered by specific events, such as harsh braking, geofence exit, or loss of signal.
  23. Sub-User: A secondary user account under a primary client, used for team access with assigned permissions.
  24. Commands Channel: Determines how commands are sent to the unit (Auto, SMS, GPRS, or Both).
